The Benefits Delivery at Discharge, or BDD, program allows eligible active-duty service members to submit a VA disability claim before leaving the military. To use this process, you must file your claim between 180 and 90 days before your separation, retirement, or EAS date.

Filing during this window gives the VA time to review your records, schedule required exams and begin processing your claim before you officially transition out of service. While a rating shortly after EAS is not guaranteed, submitting a complete BDD claim can help reduce delays and put you in a better position as you enter civilian life.

Your VA claim should not start after you take the uniform off. The BDD window is one of the most important transition milestones because it allows you to document service-connected conditions while you are still on active duty.

Start early. Review your medical history, gather your records, and make sure every condition you plan to claim is documented before you separate.

Before submitting your BDD claim, take time to identify all conditions that began during service or were made worse by service. This may include:

• Chronic pain or joint issues
• Back, neck, knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle injuries
• Hearing loss or tinnitus
• Sleep issues or sleep apnea
• Migraines or headaches
• Mental health concerns
• Skin conditions
• Respiratory issues
• Digestive conditions
• Surgical history or ongoing treatment
• Any injury, illness, or condition documented during service

To help avoid delays, submit a complete claim package with the following documents:

• VA Form 21-526EZ
  Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits.
• Complete Service Treatment Records
  Include medical and dental records for your current period of service.
• Separation Health Assessment — Part A Self-Assessment
  This is required for BDD claims and helps document your current health before separation.
• Known Separation, Retirement, or EAS Date
  You must know your separation date to qualify for the BDD process.
• Private Medical Records, if Applicable
  Include records from civilian doctors, specialists, urgent care visits, physical therapy, mental health providers, chiropractic care, or other non-military treatment.
• Supporting Medical Evidence
  This may include imaging results, lab results, prescriptions, profiles, referrals, specialist notes, sleep studies, surgical records, or therapy notes.
• Dependency Information, if Applicable
  Provide spouse and child information if you are claiming dependents.
• Direct Deposit Information
  Ensure your banking information is accurate for future VA payments.
• DD Form 214
  Your final DD-214 is usually not available when you submit your BDD claim. Upload it to the VA as soon as you receive it after separation.

To remain in the BDD process, you must be available for VA exams for at least 45 days after submitting your claim. Missing exams, waiting too long, or submitting incomplete records can delay your claim.

Do not wait until the last few weeks before EAS. Use the 180–90 day window to file early, submit a complete package, and give yourself the best opportunity for a smoother transition.
